Four Points Mom & Books (10-31-2018)

Whew … I barely snuck in this month’s Four Points Mom & Books post before the end of the month.  But I did it.  Yay!

This month it’s a short post because it’s Halloween and I’m tuckered out.  But joy on these kids’ faces was totally worth it.

Okay, okay, back to the serious stuff.  Books.  🙂

In case you’re new, I read (okay, mostly listen via Audible) many books and I love to share my thoughts with you guys every month.  If you’re curious and want to check out previous posts, you can start by clicking here to view last month’s Four Points Mom & Books post.  Also, since these posts are some of my most popular ones, I decided to go ahead and create separate pages for all of my 2018 books and 2017 books.  So, if you’re quickly trying to find ideas for books you can go to one page and click directly to the books on Amazon.  Hopefully this helps you a bit when you’re in a bind and NEED a good book fast.

Alright, on to this month’s books.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

The Kiss Quotient really surprised me because the idea of reading book about a young woman hiring an escort just doesn’t fit in with my typical reads.  But, I really enjoyed it.  It’s a quick read (or at least it was for me), and it brought a bit of levity to my reading list.  If you enjoyed The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, you’re going to love this book too.  I recommend it!

Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson

If you’re in the mood for a powerful, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching story, read this book.  But, I have to warn you – it’s super heavy.  The author navigates issues of class, race, gentrification, gender, and so much more.  You’ll want to hug your babies tighter each night and pray over how you should parent them when they’re adolescents and teenagers.  In my “real” job, I’ve seen just how bad many home lives can be for children.  This book gives you a glimpse into the home life of one family.  I recommend it if you think you can and should dive into the topic.

The Secrets of Midwives by Sally Hepworth

Sally Hepworth has quickly jumped into my list of top authors as I’m here reading ANOTHER of her books.  I think this is the fourth book I’ve read by her in the past few months.  This one didn’t let me down.  It’s really good!  I have a confession to make, though.  About a third of the way into this book I realized that this plot wasn’t just similar to a book I’ve previously read.  It was a book I previously read.  Sigh … Have you ever done that?  I felt so silly, but I couldn’t remember all the details and I just kept reading it.  It’s the story of three generations of midwives and each of them are holding back a deep secret from their family members.  Just like the praise I’ve given Hepworth’s other books, it’s a unique story and I didn’t expect how it would unwind.  I highly recommend it!

The Perfect Nanny by Leila Slimani

I’ve seen this book on the bestseller lists for a very long time and I was so excited to finally have it become available for me in the library.  I hate to say it, but I was let down.  And, I’m feeling bad for my friend Christina because I gave it to her as a gift a few months ago.  Whoops … sorry Christina!  I thought it was going to be amazing.  Originally written in French, this book follows the lives of a couple who hire a nanny for their two children as well as the nanny herself.  The novel opens with a murder scene involving the nanny and the children, so the whole time you’re waiting to find out what happened.  And, let me warn you that the entire time you’re hating the fact that you’re getting to know these sweet children who will be involved in a horrendous incident eventually.  All in all, this books great reviews elsewhere but not from me.  Sorry … I just didn’t love it.

The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison

I’m just a big-time Debby downer this post, but I also didn’t love this post.  Several of my friends did love it, though, and they think I’m crazy for not loving it.  This book provides you with both a husband and wife’s perspective as their marriage unravels.  It’s one of those books in which I found myself wanting to yell out to the characters “are you crazy?  why are you doing that?  just say how you feel!”.  LOL.  Know what I mean?  I didn’t dislike  the book, but I just didn’t love any of the characters or care how they ended up in the end.  However, it’s being made into a movie and Nicole Kidman will be the lead.  Maybe you’ll want to check it out first so that you’re ahead of the game when the movie comes out.

Alright, sorry for the short reviews.  Don’t forget to follow me on GoodReads to see what else I’m reading!  See ya later friends!
