Four Points Mom & Books (9-27-2018)

I am so excited to share with you the books I’ve read this past month.  I have some AMAZING reads for you.  Seriously – this was a great book month for this book nerd.  If you’re a fellow book nerd, get excited to stock up in your Amazon cart today!

In case you’re new, I read (okay, mostly listen via Audible) many books and I love to share my thoughts with you guys every month.  If you’re curious and want to check out previous posts, you can start by clicking here to view last month’s Four Points Mom & Books post.  Also, since these posts are some of my most popular ones, I decided to go ahead and create separate pages for all of my 2018 books and 2017 books.  So, if you’re quickly trying to find ideas for books you can go to one page and click directly to the books on Amazon.  Hopefully this helps you a bit when you’re in a bind and NEED a good book fast.

Alright, let’s go ahead and get to my books this month.  I have a couple good ones for you!

The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth

Wow.  Just wow.  This book will certainly make my list of favorite books for 2018.  At only 38-years-old, Anna’s mind is quickly taken over by early onset dementia.  Within a year she finds herself in an assisted living facility, straining to hold onto memories and kindle a relationship with a fellow resident in a similar predicament.  The other main character, Eve, is also struggling to keep it together as she raises her young daughter following the financial scandal her husband created (think Bernie Madoff).  Sally Hepworth beautifully creates the world of both main characters in this heartwrenching story.  It’s tough at times, but oh so worth it.  Read The Things We Keep!

Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris

Creepy, creepy, creepy.  But so good!  That’s how I can best describe this book by B. A. Paris.  They seem like the perfect couple. He’s a successful attorney who has never lost a case representing battered women.  She is his young pretty new wife who was a buyer at Harrod’s.  (Hello, dream job!).  But, we soon learn that everything isn’t what we think.  I don’t want to give anything away, but if you like thrillers you should read Behind Closed Doors.

The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo

The Light We Lost has been on my “to-read” list for SO long.  As you can imagine, I was so excited to read it.  In the end, I had built it up so much that it just couldn’t live up to my high hopes.  It is a sweet read, following the story of a couple who met on 9/11.  They never seem to be able to make it work and you follow them through about ten years, hoping it somehow works out.  It’s a pretty good read, but not one I highly recommend if I’m honest.

The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth

After reading The Things We Keep, I wanted more Sally Hepworth in my life.  ;). I’ve actually had The Family Next Door on my “to-read” list for several months, so I was thrilled when it showed up as available in my library account.  Unlike The Light We Lost, this one didn’t leave me disappointed.  You follow several women who are all neighbors of each other in Australia.  (Side note:  the narrator in the audiobook performs wonderfully.). Most people move to this neighborhood do so because they want a nice, quaint place to raise children.  When a single woman moves in, everyone wonders why.  Again, Hepworth tells the story from multiple perspectives, and she does it beautifully.  There are a few twists and turns along the way, and I was pretty shocked at the end.  I recommend this one too!

Heat Wave by Nancy Thayer

If you follow my Four Points Mom & Books posts, you know I love Nancy Thayer novels.  They’re easy beach reads that are typically up-beat. I wouldn’t call Heat Wave up-beat, but it is a compelling book.  Carley finds herself a widow after her husband unexpectedly dies of a heart attack.  She’s on her own, trying to figure out how to keep her children in their childhood home.  I wouldn’t consider it a beach read, but it is an easy, sweet read.

Don’t forget to follow me on GoodReads to see what else I’m reading.
