Friday Favorites with Four Points Mom (3-16-18)

It’s Friday Favorites time!  Today’s somewhat of a sad day because it signals the end of spring break for us.  This is what I’m feeling like this morning.

Unlike most of our friends, we stayed in town this week since my husband and I both had to work.  However, we did manage to do a few fun things around Austin.  Since it’s been a few weeks since my last Friday Favorites post, I’m also excited to share with you a few other things we’ve been up to lately today.

In case you’re new around here, I love throwing together a Friday Favorites blog post.  These are totally random slices of favorites from the past week or so.  Here’s a link to my last Friday Favorites to give you some back story.  You can also search for Friday Favorites in the top menu to find more of these posts.

So, what am I excited to share with you today?

Last week I was invited to an exclusive screening of A Wrinkle In Time at Moviehouse & Eatery.

You all know how much I love Moviehouse, so I was thrilled to be invited to check out this new movie with two of my favorite actresses (hello Reese and Mindy) AND enjoy a four-course meal with cocktails … on the house.  I didn’t think I could fall further in love with Moviehouse, but I was wrong.  If you haven’t ordered the Grilled Shrimp Tacos or Brussel Sprouts, add that to your order next time you visit.  YUM!    Plus, I now have a swag bag full of cool stuff, including the A Wrinkle In Time book (which is great since the movie was a bit confusing), a portable speaker, free guest passes, a t-shirt, and more.

Stay tuned because I’m going to be offering some really fun giveaways from Moviehouse in the coming weeks.  And, if you live in Southwest Austin get really excited.  Moviehouse is opening their second Austin location at William Cannon and Southwest Parkway soon.  You South Austinites are going to love joining in the fun!

Kite Fest!

The weekend before last we joined up with our friends, the Otts and Neffs, and took the kids to the ABC Kite Fest.  If you didn’t make it this year, be sure to mark your calendar for it next year because you don’t want to miss it.

Not only did our kids have a blast jumping on trampolines, climbing rock walls,

hanging in hammocks,

and getting their faces painted,

but we all got to sit back and watch the beautiful kites take over the sky.

For some reason the kite fest is plagued by rain pretty much every year.  This year was no exception, but thankfully the rain stopped mid-morning and we enjoyed beautiful sunshine the remainder of the day.  However, the kids were soaking wet and muddy.  As our friend, Brad, put it, Parker was in “full festival mode” and ended up running around without a shirt on at one point.  😉   But, you know it’s a success when your kids look like this on the way home.

🙂

Yesterday the kids and I had an amazing day at Science Mill in Johnson City.

I heard about the Science Mill several months ago and it’s been on my list to visit.  I was thrilled when they offered us passes to check it out this week.

With over 40 cutting-edge technology-based exhibits, games, and programs, the Science Mill did not disappoint.  The Science Mill encourages excites students and encourages them to take on a life-long career in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  This place is perfect for Foster who asked me during our “reading time” the other day to just find books that have math in numbers in them because that’s what he likes to learn about.  🙂

Foster loved the AC/DC electrical display.  Are you surprised that I tried to help him and he ended up telling me he could manage on his own?

By the way, Foster has this Circuits Game and he’s obsessed with it.  It’s literally been taking up our dining room floor off and on all week, so if you have a STEM-loving child I recommend it.  🙂

And who knew that 5-year-olds can put together DNA sequences?

Plus, the outdoor space is incredible!

We dug for fossils.

We enjoyed following the tortoises around.

And Foster learned about levers while he attempted to join the winning team in a game of tug of war.

Although the Science Mill is definitely geared towards elementary-aged kiddos, Foster was able to jump right in and participate in most of the exhibits.  Parker was too young for much of it, but we found plenty for her to enjoy too.  For example, this toddler area near the cafe provided endless entertainment for her (and Foster) while I waited in line to order our food.

If you’re in last-minute “get out of the house on the last day of spring break mode,” I wholeheartedly recommend you take your kiddos 4 and up to Science Mill today – Sunday.  If you can head there then, you’ll enjoy their spring break event, Robot Mania.

Robot Mania at Science Mill

There are several unique robot-esque exhibits this week, but this was our favorite.  Race to the cheese!

On a side note, Foster was given the K’Nex Ferris Wheel for Christmas and it’s one of his favorite building toys.

I spent quite some time putting it together with him.  To be honest, I was REALLY proud of myself for that accomplishment.  LOL.  However, he was quick to point out that my ferris wheel was quite tiny compared to this one …

Yeah, I feel a little less impressed with myself now.

I didn’t even touch the surface of the many exhibits and activities your kids will love at Science Mill.  I’m hoping to write a separate post to provide even more info and recommendations, so stay tuned.  If you can’t get there this week, be sure to add it to your list for an upcoming weekend or over the summer!

Okay, that’s it for me today.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!  Hopefully we can all enjoy the sun as much as Parker was at Science Mill yesterday …

Oh, and have you seen the new Native styles?

I LOVE Natives for both of the kids in the spring and summer months.  They’re pricey but worth it for so many reasons:  (1) both of my kiddos can put them on themselves, (2) I can rinse them off in the sink and make them look brand new with a simple Clorox wipe, (3) they’re closed-toed while airy which means my kids can wear them to preschool, and (4) they just look super cute.  Oh, and Foster’s Natives glow in the dark.  That’s pretty cool too.  😉  Stock up now for summer!

As always, leave a comment below, email me, or message me to let me know what you’d like to read about here on Four Points Mom.
