Four Points Mom & Books – October 2020

Happy Friday!  I’m so happy to share with you all some of the wonderful books I’ve been reading the past couple of months.

You can also find my ratings on my GoodReads page (and don’t forget to add me as a friend – I love seeing what everyone else is reading).   Be sure to comment below on your favorite reads lately.

What an interesting read!  A story of sisterhood set in a small Louisiana town in the 60s.  Two twin sisters grew up together in a town with mostly black residents.  The sisters’ skin was very light, and one of the twins discovered that when she left the town she was sometimes mistaken as white.  She eventually runs aways and leads a life as a white person.  The book follows the sisters throughout their lives, alternating points of view.   The Vanishing Half dives into issues like racism, identity, and gender, and I really recommend it as a book that can enlighten its readers on many of today’s important topics.

I loved this book so much, but it was heart-wrenching.  A Mexican girl is raped in Odessa, Texas back in the 1970s.  Five women narrate the story (whether victim, bystander, or not directly connected to the crime) and the author fully immerses you into their perspectives.  This is one of those books that you think about for a long time after finishing it.  I recommend it.

I see a pattern here and crazily enough this isn’t the last deeply eye-opening,  sad book I’m going to tell you about in this post.  A white family with a teenaged daughter moves into a neighborhood and they build a huge mansion to flaunt their new money.  The existing neighbor is heartbroken when the construction of the new house irreparably damages her beloved oak tree’s roots. However, her teenaged son ends up falling in love with the daughter of the new neighbors.  A feud between the families sprouts and the tale of the star-crossed lovers takes on a new twist.  I really enjoyed this book.

The Engineer’s Wife is based on the true story about the woman who was instrumental in building one of our country’s iconic landmarks, the Brooklyn Bridge.  Although I did feel a bit less than adequate after learning about this powerhouse of a woman, I truly enjoyed this book.  Read it!

Wow.  Just wow.  Bryan Stevenson tells about the widespread injustice he came across while defending those who are most desperate and in need in the criminal justice system.  Right out of law school, I interned in the District Attorney’s Office in Dallas County and too many of these cases sounded too familiar to those I came across during my short time there.  Actually, these cases are why I couldn’t work in the DA’s office.  Everything’s not black and white in the criminal justice world and I couldn’t bear arguing for something I didn’t believe in.  However, I digress.  I strongly recommend this book!

The Heir Affair is the sequel to The Royal We, which I absolutely loved.  The first book was loosely based on the love affair of Prince William and Kate.  This one takes place after the wedding and unfortunately didn’t live up to its predecessor.  I hate when that happens!

Lucy Foley just jumped right on my favorite authors list!  This was the first book I’ve read by her and I can’t wait to read more of her thrillers.  A group of long-time friends take a holiday in the remote Scottish Highlands.  I mean who would have seen a murderous weekend out in the middle of nowhere coming?  If you like thrillers, this is a good one. 🙂

Oh. My. Goodness.  I am so blown away by the corruption that went all the way to the top at many powerful news and media organizations.  Of course I’ve heard the stories in bits and pieces over the past few years, but to hear how it all began and just how deep it went was mind-blowing.  I definitely recommend this book!  WOW!

Whew!  That was a lot of recapping and I must say that I deserve some bubble gum pop music and beach reads at this point.  That’s it for now and I’ll be back soon with more updates.  Plus, if you want more book reviews check out my last Four Points Mom & Books post here.

Stay healthy and safe out there you guys!
