Exploring The Austin Nature & Science Center

Exploring The Austin Nature & Science Center

Today we’re talking about digging for dinosaurs, (big) bird watching, hiking trails, and a little wildlife observation.  You might be thinking I’m compiling a list of my favorite Austin kid-friendly spots, but I’m actually just telling you about one amazing FREE place to spend the day with your kids:  Austin Nature & Science Center.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen my story a few weeks ago about our visit to Austin Nature & Science Center.  Located near the intersection of Mopac and Lady Bird Lake, it takes about 30 minutes to get to this somewhat secret spot in Central Austin.

I usually park right under Mopac in the free lot next to the pedestrian bridge that crosses over to the north side of the lake. You cross Stratford Road and you’re at the entrance to the center.

I do want to warn you that the uphill walk from the entrance to the dino dig, mammal, reptile, and bird areas will take about 5 minutes.  My kids could certainly make it that far, but be prepared for a little bit of a hike if you’re carrying backpacks and kiddos (especially if it’s hot outside).  The first time we went was a little over a year ago in the summer.  I was carrying backpacks, water bottles, snacks, and Parker.  I remember it like it was yesterday … lol.  Just be prepared for it and you’ll be fine.

Austin Nature & Science Center Exhibits

The Austin Nature & Science Center Exhibits include:

Forest Trail

This trail is a self-guided exhibit which highlights 45 trees, identifying each tree with a common name and scientific name, mature height, tree facts, and whether it is deciduous or evergreen.

Dino Pit

Hands-down the Dino Pit is my kids’ favorite spot within Austin Nature & Science Center.

The dino pit is an educational dig site in which children can actually dig through the sand to find fossil casts that are modeled after specimens currently found in the Texas Memorial Museum.

As you see here, Foster was a tiny bit excited to dig for dinosaur bones on our last trip in January.

Wildlife Exhibits

Similar to a small zoo setting, you can also find tons of animals who have been given a permanent home at Austin Nature & Science Center.  These animals were either former pets who imprinted on humans or sustained injuries that prevent them from surviving in the wild.

At the mammal enclosures, we saw a bobcat, coyote, fox, and porcupine to name a few.  We also loved the Bird of Prey area’s owls and hawks.

And, finally, the small wonders building allows you to get a sneak peak of tiny creatures you might find living in your neighborhood (many of which I prefer to view in these enclosures, such as snakes and lizards).

Check Out Austin Nature & Science Center

If you’re looking for free activities with your children, I highly recommend you check out the Austin nature & Science Center.

It’s a no-frills outdoor space where your kids can run around and learn a ton.  Plus, it’s location can’t be beat in that you can stop by Zilker Park, hit up the trails, stop by the new Central Library, or grab some chips and queso from nearby Chuys.

Here’s a great video by The Texas Bucket List that provides a wonderful overview of this hidden gem.
