Last fall I first heard about CHARM, the Center for Healing and Regenerative Medicine, from my friend who was raving about her recent photofacial there.  Fast forward a couple months and here I am getting the chance to tell you all about their vast array of services.  Plus, I get to tell you ALL about my experience trying out SculpSure®  at CHARM last fall.

(This post has been sponsored by CHARM.  However, all opinions and views are my own.)

A Visit to CHARM

Located at the front of River Place, CHARM’s beautiful offices are next door to the Baylor Scott & White River Place Clinic (formerly VIK Medical Clinic).

When I first arrived for my appointment, I enjoyed lounging in the gorgeous waiting room and getting decor inspirations from the walls, lighting, and more.  I was almost sad I couldn’t wait a couple more minutes!

However, I was quickly ushered into the consultation room to hear why CHARM is much more than your typical medical or physical therapy provider.

CHARM CONSULTATION ROOM

CHARM specializes in providing non-surgical pain relief and tissue repair solutions for those with musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative conditions.  Alongside these solutions, CHARM also operates the CHARMedSpa, providing natural solutions to address hair removal, sun damage, acne scars, stretch marks, and signs of aging.  Such offerings include Botox® Cosmetic, dermal fillers, Vampire Facelift®, O-Shot®, Kybella® under chin treatment, Hyperhidrosis treatment, skin laser therapies, facial peels, and the SkinMedica® and Alitura Naturals® skin care lines.

CHARM invited me to visit the office and experience a new treatment they were excited to roll out to patients last year.  The procedure is called  SculpSure®, and it is designed to help patients get rid of stubborn fat they can’t lose with diet and exercise alone (with a particular focus on the abdomen area).  Since having my two children, I’ve gained weight and my belly is the favorite spot for my excess fat to cling for dear life.  After reading a little about the procedure and seeing photos of the results, I was definitely intrigued.

However, considering the most invasive procedures I’ve undergone are chemical peels and laser hair removal, I was quite nervous about signing up to try out this new service.  It didn’t help that I had never heard of it before.  I even requested a second conversation with the CHARM team to walk through the procedure and ask them a hundred questions to dispel some of my fears.

In the end, I agreed to try it out … and I’m glad I did!

What is SculpSure®?

SculpSure® is a non-invasive light-based body contouring procedure designed to reduce fat in problem areas such as the abdomen and love handles, all without surgery or downtime.  SculpSure® is FDA indicated for up to 24% fat reduction in the abdominal, flank and inner/ outer thigh areas.   Many other areas (like your arms and back) can also be treated, and most patients see results with as little as one treatment.

Watch this video CHARM put together to explain more about SculpSure.

They also gave me some of these fun before and after shots.  Very cool!

Four Points Mom Does SculpSure®

My visit started with a consultation with staff who explained the SculpSure procedure to me, answered my questions, and showed me the laser.  It’s my understanding that there is usually a consultation meeting and then you come back for the treatment at a later date.  However, for my visit we decided to go ahead and undergo the treatment right away.

Once I decided to move forward with the treatment, we took some before photos … don’t worry, I’m not going to embarrass myself and you by showing you my post-babies belly.  Then, the staff put in place plastic grids on the areas they would soon laser.  I sat down and they hooked in the laser machine into those grids.  It almost looked like several miniature vacuum tubes (and I imagined them vacuuming all of my fat out of my midsection).  LOL.

Once the machines were running, the procedure lasted less than 25 minutes.

The Four Points Mom Q & A about SculpSure®

I’ve shared my SculpSure® experience with several friends and I was asked many of the same questions.  You might have some of these questions running through your mind.  So, I thought I’d put together a little FAQ about the treatment.  I want to clarify, though, that these responses are 100% my opinions from my experience.  I’m not a doctor or specialist in this area by no means.  I’m only answering the questions from my perspective.  If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me or contact CHARM for more technical questions.

  • Did you see results?  Well, first I want to let you know that I only had a small section of my lower abdomen treated one time.  If I actually followed the recommended treatment plan, I would have had three other areas (upper abdomen and love handles) treated during my first visit and potentially gone back for two more subsequent visits for some of those areas.  Staff explained to me that results typically take 6 – 12 weeks to show up.  I was skeptical that I would see any results, but now that it’s been about 8 weeks I can honestly say that the procedure was effective in removing fat from my lower abdomen area.  I have lost a few pounds this month, but I do not think it’s related as I have started controlling my diet (hello healthy 2018).  However, I think that my belly has “shrunk” a bit in the area that was treated and this was apparent to me a couple weeks ago.

  • Did the treatment itself hurt?  Yes.  I want to be completely honest (as always) and let you know it was more painful than I expected it to be.  Let me remind you, though, that the most painful procedures I’ve undergone beforehand were chemical peels and laser hair removal.  Those procedures hurt, but the pain for each area lasted just seconds.  Once you are hooked up to the SculpSure® laser, you know you need to endure the level of pain (that phases in and out) for a total of 25 minutes.  There is an emergency stop button, but I didn’t want to be the wimp that pushes the emergency stop button.  Ha.  The level of pain, though, is more than what I remember from laser hair removal.  I was very happy when it was over!

  • Did it hurt afterwards?  Right afterwards, yes!   It felt a little sore for about a week, similar to what you might feel after a really intense ab workout.  I could do any and everything I wanted to, including lifting weights and running.  I just felt a bit sore for awhile.

  • Was there any downtime?  Nope.  They told me I could do anything that day even — lift weights or run even if I wanted to do so.  I heard many people get the procedure on their lunch break and go right back to work.  That being said, I was sore right after the procedure so I didn’t feel like working out.  The next day I worked out as usual.

  • How much does it cost?  This will depend on your treatment plan.  You might remember that my full recommended treatment plan would have included four separate areas (upper and lower abdomen as well as both love handles).  Plus, staff recommended at least two treatments on each area and possibly three treatments might be needed to achieve full results.  The total cost of this recommended plan would have been over $5000.  That being said, I only had that one area treated and I actually would consider going back to treat the same area one more time because it worked.  I want to lose some weight this year and if I meet my goal weight then this treatment would help get me bikini-ready!  I don’t know what that price would be, but I imagine I’d be looking at a price in the hundreds (which is much more in my price range).
