A Visit to Four Points Dermatology

Four Points Location

Last month I went to see Dr. Bhatt at the beautiful Four Points Dermatology office at the front of River Place for a full skin screening appointment.

A full skin screening is recommended annually for women in their thirties, and even more often if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer.
During a full skin screening appointment, the doctor (with an assistant in the room) carefully examines the skin all over your body, noting any abnormalities or incidences that are completely normal but to the untrained eye might seem suspicious.  When discovering large moles or uniquely colored areas, she talked to me about what they appear to be, measured them and explained that regular visits are important to keep track of changes in your skin.

What I loved about Dr. Bhatt is how I felt like she was 100% committed to providing me with a high level of service and attention during our visit and she wasn’t trying to sell me on med spa treatments, other services, or other products.  I’ve visited other dermatologists in the area who I felt like the skin check appointment was mostly used to try to get me to sign up for more expensive treatments.  This was not the case with Dr. Bhatt, even though she could have recommended several of her services, treatments, or products could likely make me look younger (hello botox …).  Of course, she could help me in those areas if I’m interested, but she focused on my concerns, providing me honest and practical solutions and emphasizing how likely I could achieve my goals (you mean cheap anti-aging creams aren’t going to magically make me look 25 again?  😉).  To learn more about Dr. Bhatt, check out her bio here.

The Four Points Mom Q & A with Dr. Bhatt of Four Points Dermatology

I’ll be honest with you – I’m not very good about asking questions of my doctors or other professionals for that matter.  But, this blog is really helping me ask questions that I’ve thought about for years but never had the courage to actually ask.  You might remember that I had tons of questions for Renee Lynch who cut and colored my hair last month.  I can’t believe I never asked a hair stylist those questions before either!

Well, Dr. Bhatt was gracious enough to answer all of my questions regarding skin health, and I had A TON for her.  Some of these are questions I’ve wondered about myself and others came from a few friends of mine.  I hope you’ve wondered about some of these topics yourself and Dr. Bhatt’s responses can help you out too!

  • How often should women get their skin checked?  It depends on several factors actually.  You should get a baseline exam in your young adult years, or even earlier if you have a strong family history of skin cancer.  Plus, we usually recommend annual checks for fair-skinned individuals or those we consider higher-risk individuals (for example, if they are immunosuppressed through cancer treatments or other conditions).  And, we do even more frequent visits with those who have a history of multiple skin cancers.

  • What is the question you get asked the most by women in their 30s and 40s?  What can I do to make my skin look great for my age?

  • What is the best piece of advice you can give women about their skin health?  Remember your sunscreen!  And reapply often!

  • How high of SPF should we really be wearing on a daily basis?  SPF 30 or higher and reapply every 1 – 3 hours.  A shot-glass amount of sunscreen should be a minimum amount for an entire adult body.

  • What is something about skin cancer that most women don’t know but you wish they did?  Skin can happen even where the sun don’t shine.

  • Is there truly one skin care regimen or ingredient that you believe in?  Topical retinoids (vitamin A creams like retin-a) are the best, easy, and most affordable anti-aging ingredient(s) to use every night.  Topical retinoids help acne, fine lines, discoloration, and improved skin tone and texture.

  • Will splurging on high-end skincare products help our skin in the long run?  How often should we get them (or other types of treatments)?    It really depends on what products are being used.  They must have some scientific validity, such as retinoids, alpha or beta hydroxy acids, and anti-oxidants, for example, are all good products and can be used daily (unless you are pregnant, nursing, or have other skin sensitivities).    Other products such as some of those at high-end store counters are packaged nicely but often do not have core ingredients.  Be an ingredient reader!
