Alright, let’s dive into today’s topic, family photos!  And keep reading to hear how you can be the winner of today’s giveaway from Hatched Photography!

It’s Family Photo Season

Okay, I’m going to be honest with you right off the bat and tell you that the idea of family photos causes me great anxiety.  First, I stress about coordinating a wardrobe among the four of us that works well in photos.  Second, I dread seeing myself in said photos (because I typically enjoy pretending I look like I did pre-babies and 15 pounds ago).  Family photos kinda bring me back to reality.  And, third, I know how difficult it is getting all four of us to look at a camera and smile at the same time.  Not to mention that right now Foster’s idea of a smile does not look anything like a smile.  Why do all kids go through that phase of “I can no longer genuinely smile for photos and I try to instead force a smile?”   Lol.

But, I’m here to tell you that Christina with Hatched Photos truly eased so much of my anxiety and captured so many wonderful moments of my family.

Christina, a mom herself to two young boys, has a passion for capturing the innocence, personality and natural beauty of the families she photographs.  Rather than striving for perfectly posed pictures, she loves drawing out each family member’s personality to show off what makes that particular family so unique and special.

Look at those smiles!  Didn’t she do an amazing job?

What To Wear

Like I mentioned above, choosing the perfect wardrobe for photos totally stresses me out.  Before our session with Christina, she emailed me a few tips on choosing outfits for everyone.  One tip in particular, though, was something I had never thought of before.  She recommended that I think about whether I will want to have a canvas made of a photo (or photos) and where would I want to place it.  Would the colors we’re wearing make sense with the decor in the room?  I was planning on wearing a red top beforehand but then I realized I do NOT decorate with red.  I don’t even like to wear red really.  So, why would I choose a red color palette that doesn’t really fit us and won’t look good in any room in our home?  It seems so obvious now!

You can find more of Christina’s tips on her blog.

Preparing Kids For A Photo Shoot

One of Christina’s other tips involved doing everything you can to make the kids comfortable before and during the shoot.  So, days beforehand I started talking about how we’re going to hang out with my friend, Christina, and play near the big bridge while she takes some cool photos of us.  They actually were excited about it!

Also, I listed to her advice and tried to dress them comfortably.  Although I’d love photos with Foster and Parker dressed up in fancy church clothes, I knew they would be super uncomfortable and would complain the whole time.  Instead, I tried to find the “nicest” clothes that they could still move about freely in.  It worked!

To be honest, the same goes for us adults!  We’re more natural when we’re comfortable too.

Plus, Christina also hinted that bribery works wonders.  Yep!  That helped us get through the evening.  We had a movie night planned following our photo shoot  … along with eggs, bacon and pancakes.  Yum!  My kids were more than happy to do what we asked knowing that was their reward at the end of the session!
