Today we’re back with another Four Points Mom & Books post. I love reading and I’m so thrilled to get to share with you all the books I’ve read each month. We started this monthly Four Points & Mom post last month (and you can read last month’s inaugural edition of Four Points Mom & Books here). Thanks for checking back in and I hope I can steer you to some great books! This month I read some really good ones, so let’s dive in.
The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis
This was our book club read this past month. I REALLY liked it. The book follows the storylines of two separate women living in the same building from two different time periods (the 1950s and today). The building today is a condo high-rise in New York City but back in the 1950s it was the Barbizon Hotel for Women, infamously known for its aspiring models, secretaries and editors who lived there. What makes this even more intriguing is that this hotel really did exist back then, housing several famous women of the time like Grace Kelly, Sylvia Plath, and even Candace Bergen.
If I’m honest, the two main characters somewhat annoyed me at times. They didn’t stand up for themselves and got pushed around quite a bit in their lives, and I really wanted them to have “that moment” during which they finally have had enough. It didn’t happen to the extreme I wish it did, but I still really enjoyed this book.
My (Not So) Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella
Sophie Kinsella is one of my favorite chick-lit authors, and her latest didn’t disappoint me. Similar to Kinsella’s other books, the story follows a single woman trying to be the idealistic career woman. And then things go awry at her job and she finds herself having to move back in with her family. I usually find myself laughing out loud throughout an entire Sophie Kinsella book, but this one wasn’t quite as funny in my opinion. I think Kinsella purposefully tried to do something a little different this time, so it wasn’t like she tried to be funny and missed. I liked this book and recommend it too. Warning … this might be a trend this month. I’m not usually such a fan of books … yay for having a good book month.
The Widow by Fiona Barton
To be honest, I did not know anything about this book before reading it. I’ve mentioned before how I usually listen to audiobooks, right? Well, unfortunately I am somewhat addicted to listening to audiobooks while I workout, drive, make dinner, etc. I go through phases during which I think I can’t possibly get through life without one. It’s bad. I download one book from audible every month, and the rest are from my library’s database. I usually go in and request several books I want from the library and every week or so one of them becomes available. This past week I finished The Dollhouse and didn’t have anything else available in my queue. So I started searching for what was available and this one looked interesting. I’m so happy I stumbled upon it!
The Widow revolves around the disappearance of a little girl, following several different characters involved in some way. There are twists and turns along the way, and mostly I just enjoyed not knowing what was coming next. Although I usually find books I stumble upon in this way lacking, I really liked this book.
Crimes Against a Book Club by Kathy Cooperman
If you follow Four Points Mom on Facebook, you might have seen my post last month in which I encouraged you to take advantage of Amazon’s Deal of the Day and download ebooks and audiobooks for just a few dollars. I came across this book that day. It was really cute. The two main characters are each going through their own financial struggles. Annie doesn’t know how she’s going to pay for her autistic son’s therapy and Sarah is running out of money for her infertility treatments. After a surreal experience at a snooty book club in La Jolla (San Diego’s version of Beverly Hills), Annie comes up with a brilliant plan to con La Jolla’s ridiculously rich women into paying thousands for a simple jar of moisturizer. But she sneaks in a secret ingredient to keep the ladies coming back for more … and it just so happens to be very illegal. 😉
This book had such a funny premise and served as a good reminder to avoid the “keeping-up-with-the-Joneses” lifestyle creep. I laughed out loud a TON. It was silly, cute and an easy read.
